IN A fresh twist to the Prof Sabharwal death case, witness Naval Kishore, a peon, said before the trial court on Wednesday that the college administration had told students that the professor was behind the cancellation of student elections and this had led to the assault on him.
Government prosecutor Vikram Singh Sikarwar said that although Kishore had said that he did not see the assailants and had turned hostile, crucial information regarding the circumstances had emerged from this statement of his.
Kishore, according to the prosecutor, said in the court that the then principal, L N Verma, and election in-charge Prof M L Nath had told the students that Sabharwal was responsible for the elections being cancelled. This, having made the students angry, resulted in the assault.
While the ABVP was in favour of the elections being held, the NSUI favoured otherwise. Sikarwar also said that Kishore’s statement had exposed the fact that the professors were divided in factions, which is the main reason behind the attack on Sabharwal. The professors did not turn to save Sabharwal and instead sent peons, he felt.
