A man believed to be the only eyewitness to the killing of a youth in army firing in Markundal village has been arrested by Sumbal police.
Sources said, Manzoor Ahmad Sheikh, a tipper driver by profession, of Markundal village, was arrested by police, after family members of one of the boys (Irfan) killed in the incident, informed the Sumbal police about Manzoor being the eyewitness to the incident.
Police however refused to comment.
The driver had on Monday told the media nobody except jawans were present in the area when Irfan was killed. He, however, said he didn't see anybody killing Irfan.
"There were five other drivers who were waiting inside the camp with their mini-trucks to go to Sonamarg," said Manzoor.
At around 11 pm, armymen boarded the five mini-trucks and covered themselves with tarpaulin. "Then they ordered me to board one of the mini-trucks as spare driver," said Manzoor.
He had said that the trucks then sped towards Markundal village in Sumbal. "As we reached Markundal, armymen jumped off the trucks and spread into the village. We were ordered to stay in the vehicles. They ran from one house to another," said Manzoor.
Within a few minutes, Manzoor said, he heard some gunshots and noise calling out Irfan's name. "Upon hearing the cries (of Irfan's family) people started coming out of their houses. Armymen quickly jumped into the vehicles and fired some shots in the air and left," Manzoor had told the media.
