An alleged tiff with her husband over Bollywood star Aamir Khan’s remarks on intolerance prompted a woman in this eastern Madhya Pradesh town to commit suicide on Thursday, police said.

However, police have not ruled out murder and the body was sent for an autopsy.

“We cannot solely rely on the husband’s statement. Statements of members of both families are yet to be recorded. The matter requires further investigation before arriving at a hurried conclusion,” said sub-inspector Arvind Singh.

Husband Ayank Pandey told police that his 24-year-old wife Sonal consumed poison on Wednesday following a heated argument over a newspaper article on Khan’s remarks. She was taken to a private hospital where she died on Thursday morning.

Pandey, who works with an NGO, told reporters that his wife went to a room and “consumed some poisonous substance” after the quarreled over the newspaper article. “I rushed to the room after hearing our child cry ...”

The couple has been married for the past four years.
