A woman boxer was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her room at a sports hostel run by the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) in the city.

S Amaravati (18), who had represented Andhra Pradesh in two national championships, did not turn up for coaching on Wednesday morning, after which her coach Omkar Singh Yadav went to her room in the Lal Bahadur Stadium complex.

Yadav found her lying on the bed amidst stains of vomit and blood. Doctors arrived on the spot and found her dead.

State Sports Minister K Venkat Reddy ordered a probe headed by SAAP’s managing director.

He said the report was expected within two days and the government would initiate measures based on it.

Police said the woman could have died on Tuesday, as there was discolouration of the body.

The boxer’s body was handed over to her family after an autopsy at the Osmania General Hospital.
