A NEWLY married woman on Saturday committed suicide by consuming Celphos tablets. She had also slashed her wrists, police said.

Neelam, 25, wife of Vasant Sahu, a resident of Pir Gate was admitted to the hospital in an unconscious state. Her condition deteriorated and she later died.

The initial post-mortem report has revealed that Neelam died of poisoning. Her parents, who live in Berasia, have alleged that she was subjected to torture despite the fact that the demands of her in-laws were met with even after marriage.

Police surmise that Neelam first consumed Celphos but also slashed her wrists in order to ensure that she would not survive. The police found Celphos powder in her room.

Neelam, the only sister amongst, three brothers, was married to Vasant, in June 2006. He runs a chemist shop under his house near Pir Gate. The Kotwali police are investigating the case. The police are waiting for the final post-mortem report before registering a case of death owing to dowry harassment.
