A woman delivered a baby girl inside the compartment of the Jabalpur bound inter-city express near Satna railway station, said railway protection force (RPF) officials on Wednesday.
A heavily pregnant Gauri Mishra was travelling to Jabalpur with her relatives. They had boarded the train at Rewa. As the train entered Satna station, the woman complained of severe labour pain.
The woman had to wait for over an hour before medical help arrived at Satna station, RPF officials said.
The mother and the new born were later moved to the Satna district hospital.
Confirming the incident, civil surgeon Satna district hospital Dr GM Singh said a heavily pregnant Mishra, a resident of Nauganj Rewa, was travelling to Jabalpur complained of severe pain and delivered a premature baby girl near Satna station.
"Around 8.30 am, the mother and the new born were brought to the hospital and we admitted them. The woman told us that she was expecting the baby on September 24," said Dr Singh.
Dr Singh said the premature baby was underweight, weighing around 1.75 kg.
"Though both are normal, we are taking extra care because this is a premature delivery," said Dr Singh.
