Woman held in post-Godhra riot case

In the first arrest of a woman in connection with post-Godhra riots in Gujarat, Geeta Ratilal Rathod was taken into custody by a Special Investigation Team on the charge of procuring kerosene used for burning people and houses at Naroda Patiya where 89 people were killed.

Police arrested three others, one in Naroda Patiya and two in Gulbarg society riot cases of 2002.

Geeta was arrested in the Naroda Patiya case last night by the SIT constituted by the Supreme Court to re-investigate some of the 2002 riot cases, including the Godhra train burning case.

Geeta was produced before metropolitan magistrate KB Magnani who sent her to police custody till November 16.

She has been accused of procuring large quantity of kerosene which was used by rioters to burn people and houses in Naroda Patiya area where 89 people were killed.

The SIT had sought remand to find from where and how much kerosene she had procured.

One Dinesh Berge, who was also arrested on Wednesday in connection with Naroda Patiya riot case, was also sent to police custody till November 16.

The court also sent one Suresh Dhobi and Mahesh Natha, arrested by the SIT in connection with the Gulbarg Society case of the 2002 riots, to police custody till November 19.

Meanwhile, two of the riot accused Badal Parmar, arrested last week, and Mahesh Natha moved an application in the court asking for narco analysis test to be conducted on them and those witnesses who had named them before the SIT.

The matter has been posted for further hearing on November 17.
