A 54-year-old homemaker was brutally murdered in her flat in Bhayander (West) on Friday. The police suspect the motive behind the murder was robbery.
No arrests have been made so far.
The police said the incident took place when the victim, Vimladevi Nahar, was alone in her ground-floor flat in Chandulal Park building. Her husband Hemraj and son were at their garment shop in Dadar, while her daughter-in-law was at her maternal home.
Her body was discovered by a neighbour, who looked into the flat on seeing the door open.
“The woman was found with several stab wounds around her neck and stomach,” said Ashok Pawar, police inspector of Bhayander police station. The house had been ransacked, the cupboards were open and the jewellery the victim had been wearing was missing, said officials.
Investigators found four to five kg of cereal lying on the sofa, which suggest that a delivery boy had come to the flat. “We have not yet been able to ascertain the exact amount of items stolen,” Pawar said.
The society’s security guard, K. Pitamber, said he had not seen anyone entering or leaving the victim’s flat. The police are looking for fingerprints and other clues left by the accused.
They hope to close in on suspects with the help of statements of the family members and neighbours.
