A 21-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted and raped by an unidentified youth at Ghatkopar station on Sunday.
The 26-year-old man fled after admitting her to Rajawadi Hospital, the police said.
The woman is from Auran-gabad and came to the city five months ago in search of a job.
“As she did not have any relatives and money, she did not have a place to stay. She stayed at Kalyan railway station,” said senior inspector Dilip Gore.
The woman, in her statement, said she was sleeping on the staircase at Ghatkopar railway station on Sunday.
“He asked me to accompany him. I refused and he started assaulting me and dragged me to the foot overbridge. I cried for help but there was no one,” she said.
The woman said she did not know the accused.
“The accused hired a rickshaw and after admitting the woman (who was bleeding profusely) to Rajawadi Hospital, fled,” said Gore.
“The medical reports have confirmed rape,” said a hospital staff, requesting anonymity.
The Kurla police have booked the accused on charges of rape.
“The woman said the accused was wearing a red T-shirt and blue jeans. Investiga-tions have revealed he is a resident of Ghatkopar,” said Gore.
“We will talk to the woman as soon as she is discharged. Then we can take down a detailed statement,” he added.
Government Railway Police Commissioner AK Sharma confirmed the incident.
“We have got some clues and will arrest him soon,” said Sharma.
“She worked as a maid and also washed utensils at the food stalls near the railway station,” said a police official.
