A day after a 22-year-old woman was found dead at her residence, the deceased's family members accused her in-laws of killing her for dowry.

The victim's relatives refused to perform the funeral, took the body to MG Road and blocked traffic for more than two hours, seeking immediate arrest of the accused. Only after assurance from police did they allow the traffic to move, a senior police officer said.

“We got a call on Thursday evening that Geeta has committed suicide. When we reached the spot no one was at home. We have collected all the necessary evidence and sent the body for postmortem. On Friday, her family performed her last rites after an assurance,” the police officer said.

According to the victim's family, she was being tortured by her in-laws for dowry. The accused Jitender, his sister Reena, brother Kapil, Geeta's mother-in-law Dhanmati and father-in-law Jeet Singh are absconding, the officer said.

The police said the couple married three months ago. The accused are residents of Rajendra Park area of Gurgaon while Geeta's family belongs to Tihar village in Delhi.

Geeta's family alleged that her in-laws were demanding dowry which led to an argument and she was allegedly murdered, the police officer said.
