india Updated: Jul 01, 2006 00:01 IST

THE SOCCER World Cup fever and especially Friday’s cliffhanger between Argentina and Germany, has put punters into overdrive.

The punters had put 1:20 rate for Germany:Argentina. With the arrest of four punters betting on the match at Kanpur Tannery compound under the Sisamau police station, the police have been put on high alert.

Police sources said, if one bets for Germany’s win then he would get double the amount.

The craze for Argentina is less but if it were to win then one would get 20 times more than the amount put in.

The punters arrested on Friday have been identified as Ramesh Verma, Parmeshwar Gupta, Ajay Gupta and Rajkumar Gautam.

From their possession, Sisamau police have recovered three mobile phones and Rs 3,300 cash.

According to police, the four punters were interacting with their clients through phone and there were hundreds of supporters for Germany, who have put their money on Germany.

Meanwhile, talking to Hindustan Times SHO Sisamau Shiv Prakash Sonkar said, “The four punters had accumulated a hefty amount from hundreds of soccer lovers, who had betted on today’s match between Germany and Argentina.”

Through punters, police were trying to get to the persons who had put their money on the match.
