The Nagpur central jail authorities handed over the body of Mumbai bomb blasts convict, Yakub Memon, after a post mortem performed at the jail hospital by a team of doctors, on Thursday morning.
Yakub’s elder brother, Suleiman and cousin, Usman Memon who were staying at a local hotel, reached the jail around 8.30am after getting a message from the jail authorities and claimed the body.
Suleiman had given an application to the jail authorities on Wednesday evening for handing over the body to them. He also gave an undertaking that the Memons would not hold any demonstration with the body and ensure a quiet burial in Mumbai.
After completing all formalities by 9.30am, Suleiman and Usman took custody of the body and left for the Nagpur airport by 9.45am, said the local jail authorities. The body was being taken to Mumbai for burial by a service flight, they added.
Memon was hanged barely two hours after the Supreme Court rejected a last-ditch petition by senior lawyers to spare his life following a dramatic late-night hearing.
The lone death row convict in the case was executed at 7am amid massive security on his birthday. He was sentenced to death for the dozen explosions that rocked India’s financial capital, killing 257 people and leaving more than 700 injured.
