Anganwadi workers here have decided to join the day-long nationwide strike on Friday for fulfilment of their demands of pay hike and other benefits at par with other government employees in the country.
According to the Anganwadi Karmachari Sabha (Maharashtra) District unit president Ashok Bhutada, all the three unions of the Anganwadi employees would join the strike.
In a press note, the union has rapped the State and Centre for giving the Anganwadi employees a step motherly treatment as compared to the other Government employees.
"It is painful to state that the Anganwadi sevikas have to discharge various responsibilities such as the care taking of young kids, providing the young kids and the pregnant women the nutritious food, implementation of family planning scheme, promoting polio vaccines and others.
But their monthly honorarium is Rs 2,000-3,000 only,” the press release said, adding that even the meagre honorarium is not being paid regularly to them.
"We have been demanding regular monthly salary at par with other Government and semi-Government employees," the Union Secretary Sandhya Embadwar said and asked how they would able to look after their family with such meagre wages.
"We will take out a rally to the Zilla Parishad as part of the agitation on Friday and if the Government fails to concede our just and genuine demands, we will intensify our agitation," Suman Waghmare of the union said.
