Senior Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader and former Union minister K Yerrannaidu died in a road accident in Srikakulam district in the early hours of Friday, when the car he was travelling in collided with an oil tanker.
A member of the TDP politburo, Yerrannaidu (55) was returning to Srikakulam from Visakhapatnam after attending a wedding. He was shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Srikakulam town, where he was pronounced dead around 3.30am.
Four persons, including the district TDP president, were injured in the accident. Yerrannaidu is survived by his wife, Vijayalakshmi, son and daughter. Yerrannaidu joined the late NT Rama Rao, when the latter floated the TDP in 1982. He was MLA for four terms and MP from 1996 to 2009, when he lost. He was Union minister for rural development and employment from 1996 to 1998.
TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu broke down after seeing the body of his close lieutenant. His death will be a blow to the TDP. A pall of gloom descended on Srikakulam, the native district of Yerrannaidu. Hundreds of mourners gathered at his village Nimmada.
The cremation will take place on Saturday.
