Of the 63, cases have been registered against two firms that were found to be repeat offenders. If convicted, owners of these agencies face up to six months behind bars. The remaining dealers were fined up to Rs 10,000 depending on the extent of the violation. There are 300 authorised agencies supplying cooking gas cylinders in the city.

The raids revealed that the cylinders being delivered to consumers weighed much less than the prescribed 14.2 kg (in addition to the weight of the cylinder itself). The shortfall in amount of gas ranged between 200 g and 2.5 kg.

Most violators were from west Delhi, where 15 agencies from areas such as Janakpuri, Rajouri Garden, Subhash Garden and Tilak Nagar were booked, followed by northwest (11), central (10) and east (7) Delhi.

“These raids will continue in the coming days and strict action will be taken against offenders,” said SS Yadav, commissioner, food and supplies, Delhi government.

As per rules, the maximum permissible error in the weight of a domestic LPG cylinder is +/- 150 grams. The department has also issued instructions to all dealers to provide verified weighing scales to every delivery person and instruct them to check the cylinders before handing them over to customers.
