A youth from Thane district was arrested on Saturday for suspected links with the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) but officials said it was yet to be ascertained if he had played any role in the July 11 bomb blasts in Mumbai.
Itesham Siddiqui, a resident of Mira Road in Thane, was arrested from his residence this morning under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and produced in a local court, which remanded him to police custody till August 12.
Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) officials said Siddiqui was held after his name came up during the interrogation of one of the accused, who knew him as a SIMI activist.
Since it is suspected that SIMI played an important role in the bomb attacks on commuter trains, Siddiqui was arrested, the officials said.
