Youth hangs self to death in south Mumbai

india Updated: Jul 06, 2009 22:48 IST

A 18-year-old youth on Monday allegedly hanged himself to death at his residence at Colaba in south Mumbai, police said.

The deceased identified as Ashar Mendan was found hanging to a ceiling rod with a rope at his ground floor residence by his sister in Jairaj building at Colaba, they said.

"The reason for the extreme step is not yet known. Ashar wanted to go to Australia for higher studies to which his mother did not agree," a senior police officer told PTI.

"Instead she wanted him to go to the USA. Why her mother refused him to send to Australia is not known. But this could be one of the reasons for the suicide," he added.

No suicide note was found, police said adding that the mobile phone of Ashar has been seized.
