A 22-year-old youth was murdered and beheaded by a four-member gang near Periyanaickenpalayam on the city outskirts, police said on Monday.
The youth, working as a supervisor in a factory, was returning from duty on his motorcycle when he was waylaid by the gang around 1 AM and attacked with sickles.
"The gang then severed the head of the youth, Harikrishnan, and threw the body and head in a nearby farm," police said.
"One of the gang members reportedly called the police station and informed them about the murder," the sources said.
Police recovered the body and head.
"Preliminary investigations suggest that the gang had come from Tiruchirappalli. Special teams have been formed and sent to different places, including Tiruchirappalli, Chidambaram and Madurai. Previous enmity was said to be the motive for the murder," the sources added.
