A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped inside a police outpost in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun district late on Sunday night. The alleged rapist reportedly took advantage of police negligence to commit the crime.
Three police constables were arrested along with the alleged rapist on Monday for the crime that took place at Lalpul police outpost under Kotwali police station. The constables were also suspended.
According to the police, locals spotted the girl and her maternal grandfather resting at the dargah at an unusually late hour. Gopal, a local, accompanied two constables who brought the 65-year-old man and his granddaughter — residents of Rampur district — from the dargah to the outpost.
The girl said the two constables who had picked them up left the outpost after some time. The elderly man alleged that another constable at the outpost drove him away after he refused to heed his threats and pay a bribe.
In between, Gopal allegedly raped the girl in a room at the outpost. The girl alleged that the constable present at the outpost did not come to her rescue.
Locals surrounded the outpost during the early hours of the day and demanded immediate arrest of the accused. The Kotwali police took Gopal into custody and sent the girl for medical examination.
Ratan Kumar Srivastava, senior superintendent of police, Badaun, said the medical report was awaited.
"Strict action has been ensured against the three police personnel. The main accused has been sent to jail."
