Zaheer Khan missed the perfect 10 in the first innings but his 11-wicket match haul helped Worcestershire thrash Essex by nine wickets in the County Championship Division Two match at Chelmsford on Saturday.
Worcestershire scored a huge 650 for seven declared before bundling out Essex for 283 in the first innings. Following on, Essex were all out at 486, setting Worcestershire a victory target of 120.
The win helped Worcestershire overtake Essex in the Division Two county championship table.
In the first innings, Zaheer had come within one wicket of snapping up all 10 wickets in an innings but lost out on the rare record when Essex batsman Darren Gough, who could have been his 10th victim, was dropped by wicketkeeper Steven Davies.
In the second innings, Zaheer picked two wickets. He first caught Ronnie Irani (97) off his own bowling and six runs later, trapped Ryan Doeschate (0) leg before to complete his 11-wicket haul in the match.
Among the Worcestershire batsmen, Phil Jaques added an unbeaten 60 to his first innings double century to help the side reach the target.
