Manjit Kaur, daughter of former President Giani Zail Singh, has thrown her hat in the election ring by staking claim for Congress ticket from the Ludhiana (rural) assembly seat.
Kaur, presently serving as Senior Medical Officer (SMO) in Civil Hospital in Ludhiana, has recently applied for pre-mature retirement from government service.
She has decided to forego her remaining two years of government service in order to be eligible to contest the assembly election.
Kaur said she had opted for Ludhiana (rural) as majority members of Ramgarhia community, to which she belongs, live in this constituency. Her in-laws too belong to Ludhiana.
The constituency is being represented in the outgoing assembly by Malkiat Singh Birmi, who, it is said, is out of favour for re-nomination as a Congress candidate.
Birmi, who was Chief Parliamentary Secretary, had to relinquish charge last year on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Amrinder Singh when he openly criticised PPCC president Shamsher Singh Dullo.
The Akali Dal-BJP combine has already announced Hira Singh Gabaria, also a Ramgarhia, as its candidate from the constituency.
