Using the Gurgaon Expressway’s non-stop lane—on which motorists don’t have to stop to pay the toll—is now cheaper. DS Constructions, builders of the expressway, have slashed the rate for Smart Tags — prepaid smartcards that the automatic sensors at the toll plaza read, and let you through — from Rs 2,500 to Rs 1,000.
DSC spokesperson Rafi Khan said: “Earlier we were charging Rs 1,500 as refundable deposit, Rs 1,000 as minimum usage charge, and giving Rs-500 credit to Smart Tag users. We have now scrapped the Rs-500 credit and slashed the deposit and minimum usage charges to Rs 500 each, thus bringing down the initial price of the tag to Rs 1,000 only.”
The builders hope the move will draw more users to the non-stop lane and reduce the terrible congestion (see picture on right) at the 32-lane toll plaza at the Gurgaon border. Three out of every 10 motorists currently use the smart tags; the rest use the cash lanes.
The cards will be on sale at multiple points, including at special counters at popular malls and markets in Gurgaon, the builders said.
