Mumbai City FC ended Chennaiyin FC’s three-match winning streak in the Indian Super League as they defeated the 2015 champions 1-0 in Mumbai

Mumbai City FC maintained their long-running home record by beating Chennaiyin FC 1-0, in what can be best described as physically driven contest between the two at the Mumbai Football Arena on Sunday.

Cameroonian forward Achille Emana scored from the penalty spot in the second half to send the crowd home content, as Mumbai extended their unbeaten record at home to six games, also halting Chennayin’s three-match winning spree.

The first quarter of the game seemed more like a rugby match. There seemed to be very little intent in actually finding the back of the net. The tackles and takedowns even infuriated Chennayin’s coach John Gregory on a couple of occasions.

Mumbai got the first shot on target in the 15th minute, with Gerson Viera crossing to Everton Santos, whose tame header bounced into the hands of Chennaiyin goalkeeper Karanjit Singh.

Chennaiyin’s best chance came 14 minutes later as Jude Nworuh floated in a ball from the flank only to see it narrowly miss the head of Mohammed Rafi. A touch from the Indian forward would have certainly put the visitors in the lead.

Rafi will surely rue his missed opportunities throughout the match. He had headed another into the hands of Amrinder Singh at the end of the first period and missed the visitor’s most clear-cut opportunity just after the break.

Rene Mihelic had played Rafi clean through in the 49th minute. But the forward’s low shot was parried away by Amrinder, only to fall to Thoi Singh who could not find the decisive touch in front of an open goal.

Mumbai found their break through in the 58th minute after they were awarded a penalty. Mailson Alves brushed Balwant Singh aside just inside the box. Mumbai’s best player on the night by far -- Emana stepped up to coolly to slot it into the bottom left corner.

Mumbai were also guilty of being wasteful and could have easily sealed the game on a couple of occasions. Rafael Jorda found himself free on goal in the 75th minute but his attempted lob over Karanjit was off the mark.

Just 10 minutes later the Spaniard was wonderfully fed by substitute Thiago Dos Santos, but another attempted lob from the forward meant Mumbai were forced to play out another nervy seven minutes before emerging victors on the night.
