Here’s another indicator of corruption in Delhi Police.

According to records of the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), 20 personnel from the Delhi Police, from the ranks of constables to inspectors, were arrested in various cases registered in 2008.

This is the most number of people arrested from a single government department or all individual cases put together.
Sources in the ACB said Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) were next in the list. While 16 MCD employees were arrested, NDMC’s number was 10.

Apart from the 87 people arrested for cases registered in 2008, 26 others were arrested this year for cases pertaining to previous years. Of these, the maximum were cases related to MCD (14).

And its not that only government departments are corrupt. As many as 17 individuals — most of them touts or conduits — were arrested for involvement in corruption cases in 2008.

The Delhi Police said it was doing its best to weed out corruption from the force. “Corruption is an individual abrasion. (Not just ACB), we also arrest our own people for corruption,” said spokesman Rajan Bhagat. “We ensure the person involved gets strict punishment, even removal from service.”

He said that the department was also taking steps to prevent corruption. “This year we revised many standing orders which will help in institutionalising procedures. The other measure is better supervision,” he said.
