Alprazolam tablets worth over Rs 7 lakh confiscated in Indore

Central Bureau of Narcotics and the narcotics wing of the Madhya Pradesh police have seized Alprazolam tablets worth Rs 5 lakh and Rs 2.30 lakh in two separate operations on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Alprazolam is a controlled drug and is frequently used for addiction. Criminals in Indore have often been found downing this tablet with liquor before committing an offence. The tablets are anti-anxiety pills and are classified under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act which calls the use of drug without a prescription as an offence.

While the former operation resulted in a catch of 700 gms of the tablet near MY hospital from three drug peddlers operating from Indore, 34,500 Alprazolam tablets were seized from the vehicle of a 55-year-old man near Green Park colony, Dhar road on Wednesday. All four accused have been booked under Sections 8/22 of the NDPS act.

Prior to this operation, the narcotics wing of state police had arrested two persons and seized over 19,000 Alprazolam tablets on September 16, while 2,18,250 Alprazolam tablets were confiscated from a man arrested the same day near Dawa Bazaar area.

Meanwhile, another operation was carried out wherein the narcotics wing of Madhya Pradesh seized 19,425 tablets on September 15.

“Alprazolam has become the new cocktail drug. Inputs from previous operations state that this drug is slowly crawling into party circuits of the city,” said Mukesh Khatri, superintendent, Central Bureau of Narcotics.

As per statistics available with the Narcotics branch of Madhya Pradesh, so far tablets worth over `18 lakh have been seized.

Additional director general of police Varun Kapoor said the drugs seized by the central Narcotics bureau on Wednesday belonged to Cadilla company and were being sold under the name of Anzilum.
