The Bharatiya Janata Party's state-level mega, high-tech membership drive, scheduled to be launched by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday from the city, is a move to further party's ambitious programme.
The saffron party's ultimate aim is to emerge world's largest political party by beating Communist Party of China which is considered to be the world's largest political outfit having roughly 86.7 million (8.67 crore) members. The BJP thinks it is possible to enrol more than eight crore people as its members in India which has population of 121 crore.
"Yes, we want to be the world’s biggest party and enroll more members than China's communist party," said state president BJP Nand Kumar Singh Chouhan who will be present during Monday's membership drive in Indore.
The BJP's confidence to emerge as world's biggest political entity stems from its overwhelming victory in 2014 Lok Sabha elections led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Modi was first to enroll through his mobile phone at the launch of BJP's 'Maha Sadasyata Abhiyan' (mega membership drive) held in New Delhi last month.
State BJP leaders say party wants its sympathisers to become members. "Besides drawing freshers to the partyfold, our emphasis is on converting BJP supporters as party' formal members," a party MLA said wishing anonymity.
The national leadership has directed the state BJP units to increase membership by three to four times of their existing strength by March 2015.
According to informal estimate, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have 20 lakh BJP members. After inaugurating campaign in Indore, the party plans to hold similar drive across Madhya Pradesh on December 25, 2014, which is the birthday of its veteran leader and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
In Madhya Pradesh, it will be party's first high-tech membership drive which will be held as a public function at city's Vaishnav stadium. Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will announce party's toll-free number from the stage and people present at the venue will be requested to dial it from their mobile phones.
Once they complete dialing, the connection will be snapped. In seconds, they will receive SMS in Hindi and English welcoming them to the BJP.
The SMS will ask dialers to send in their name, address, pin code and if possible their voter ID number, e-mail address to the given code. The dialers can enrol three family members in BJP while completing their membership formalities from their mobile phone. Membership enrolment through mobile phone is a centralised system controlled from party headquarters in New Delhi.
