Bharatiya Janata Party's move to hold public felicitation of chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on July 3 for his public welfare measures including 24x7 power supply is being seen as party's informal launch of election campaign from Indore, a city of Chouhan's dreams.

To be organised by BJP-led Indore Municipal Corporation, the public felicitation appears to be a function for BJP, by BJP and of BJP in an assembly election year when the saffron party aspires to form government for the third time.

A statement issued by the city BJP office on Sunday night admitted that party leaders and activists will help organise the function in addition to city's leading business and social organisations.

On Monday, city BJP president Shankar Lalwani presided over a meeting of party corporators, who were told to ensure the presence of a large number of voters and party members from their wards in the public felicitation function.

Mayor Krishna Murari Moghe, a senior BJP leader, convened a meeting in this regard on Sunday and announced to form a committee that will organise the function.

On Monday, the panel was formed which includes senior advocate Anand Mohan Mathur and Indore university vice-chancellor Dhirendra Pal Singh.

So, is this an informal launch of BJP's vote seeking and impress-all campaign? "In democracy, people have right to anticipate and assess.

We are organising chief minister's public felicitation because he has provided round-the-clock electricity which is commendable. MP has become third state in the country to do it," mayor Moghe told HT.

Asked if the chief minister will be weighed in silver at his public felicitation function, Moghe said timber market association will donate 11 kilograms of silver, Anil Bhandari will donate three kilograms of silver, iron traders will donate two kilograms of silver, among others.

City's Mahatma Gandhi Road along which are located maximum shops, commercial complexes is lined with posters carrying photos of Chouhan equating him with former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his vision for development.

The posters eulogise Chouhan for providing round-the-clock electricity for the first time in state.
