Two private security guards were arrested on Monday for allegedly attempting to rape a 25-year-old Netherlands citizen at a mall in Vijay Nagar area in Indore, police said.

The woman was in the city to attend the wedding function of a female friend who lives in Gulmohar Colony. Both are pursuing a PhD programme at a university in Amsterdam, police said

Additional superintendent of police (East zone- I) Rakesh Singh said, “The incident occurred at 1 am on Monday inside a washroom on the first floor of Mangal Mall. Police have arrested both the accused – Sonu Patel, who hails from Rewa district, and Onkar Thakur of Khalghat village in Barwani district.”

During the preliminary investigation, it was found that the two accused were employed by MR21, a private security agency, he said

According to Singh, on Sunday night, the victim along with her Indian friend and some others went to Level-3 pub situated on the third floor of Mangal Mall for a get together ahead of the marriage ceremony.

Around 1 am, when all of them had come down to the parking lot, one of the friends realized he had forgotten his mobile phone in the pub. As the victim wanted to use a washroom, she accompanied him. On the first floor, she entered the ladies washroom, while her friend went to the pub to get his phone.

“Taking advantage of the situation, one of the accused Patel went inside the washroom and tried to rape her by threatening her of dire consequences. However, she raised an alarm,” the police officer said.

Hearing the commotion, all the victim’s friends rushed to the first floor, where another accused Thakur tried to stop them. But they managed to rescue the woman and catch Thakur. “Patel fled the spot, but later arrested by police,” Singh said.

A case has been registered against the two accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 354 A (physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures), 354 D (stalking) and 376 (rape).

Singh said they would inform the Netherlands Embassy about the crime after police complete all necessary formalities. The proprietor of MR21 security agency along with verification records of the two security guards has also been summoned by police.
