The body of Kartik Mishra, the 13-year-old boy who was kidnapped on Tuesday night from a popular coaching institute in the city, was found in the Narmada river near Mandleshwar on Thursday after his abductors were quizzed by the police.
Kartik, a resident of Dakchaya area under Kshipra police station, had gone missing from Catalyzer coaching institute in Scheme 54 on Tuesday, following which his father had received a ransom call for Rs 5 lakh from his abductors.
A senior police officer said the abductors, identified just as Nanu and Kahna, were arrested late on Wednesday night on the basis of the complaint, and during interrogation revealed that the 13-year-old had been murdered on the day of his abduction. The police found the body on Thursday evening.
“The abductors killed the boy about an hour after they picked him up from the coaching institute. We nabbed the accused late on Wednesday night and are quizzing them,” deputy inspector general of police Santosh Kumar Singh told HT.
Both Nanu and Kahna were residents of the victim’s locality and known to Kartik and his family. According to the police, the accused found Kartik in front of his coaching institute at around 7:30 pm on Tuesday and offered to drop him home on their bike. They then took a detour to Palaisa on the pretext of some business there.
When Kartik became suspicious, they snatched away his cell phone and made the first ransom call at around 8:30 pm, according to a source privy to the investigation. The boy was scared and began crying, following which the abductors, one of whom was in an inebriated state, thrashed him.
At around 9 pm they reached the bypass and their tussle with the boy escalated. The accused then covered Kartik’s mouth, which allegedly led to him suffocating to death.
They then made another ransom call to his father. At around 10:30 pm, they reached Kasravad, about 70 km from Indore, and dumped Kartik’s body in the Narmada river before fleeing.
Further investigation in the matter is on, and the possibility of it being a case of revenge has not been ruled out.
