A woman was killed and 11 people were injured when a wall of an under-construction building collapsed over construction workers on Monday afternoon near Premsukh cinema in South Toda.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place when a few workers at the construction site were trying to pull up a tree root obstructing the ongoing work.
The workers dig a big pit and were trying to pull up the roots of a tree which was causing obstruction in the work site.
"While doing so, the workers did not realize that the root was upsetting the foundation of the building. The wall adjacent to the pit crumbled and huge chunks concrete fell upon workers, before they could have reacted," said one of the witnesses.
The mounds of rubble and concrete came down thumping on ground crushing 12 workers employed at the site, out of which nine were women.
According to Rawji Bazar police, who reached the construction site for rescuing the people trapped inside the debris, one woman died and eleven people were injured in the incident.
The police said, one woman Sharada Bai (45) died and eleven others who were employed at the construction site were injured in the incident. The injured were immediately shifted to hospital.
South Toda is one of the low income group localities in Indore, and of late, constructions are picking up pace in the area.
Officials of Indore Municipal Corporation also reached the spot to take stock of the situation, and to understand on what could have caused the collapse.
