Even as the Lokayukta police are investigating a multi-crore tribal scholarship scam in paramedical colleges, investigations into a strikingly similar scam that took place in the Government Arts and Commerce College (GACC) in 2004-05, is nearing completion by the State Bureau of Investigation for Economic Offences (EOW).
Sources said that the EOW said the charge-sheet is likely to be filed by year end against the 15-member scholarship committee who issued the scholarships in the GACC. Among others the then college principal, some senior teachers were members of the committee. Recently, the EOW sleuths had gone to the college and recorded the statements of all the committee members and also seized documents pertaining to the scam.
Though the scam took place in 2004-05, the case was registered by the EOW in 2010 and then the case was put in the backburner. It was only recently that the files were dusted and the investigation gathered pace.
Source said the scam is to the tune of around Rs 30 lakhs. Like the scholarship scam in paramedical colleges, in the GACC too the modus-operandi was the same; the only difference being that GACC is a government college while the paramedical colleges are private.
