Facing severe criticism from different quarters including the high court, pollution control board and citizens, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) is planning to shut down all the three abattoirs in Indore, until it shifts them to another location.
IMC was recently reprimanded by the HC for taking the matter casually and not initiating tendering process for shifting abattoirs.
An IMC official said: "We are planning to close down the abattoirs operational in Khajrana, Juni Indore and Gaffur Khan ki Bajariya near Khajuri Bazaar as soon as possible."
However, the final decision has to come from the divisional commissioner, he added.
Earlier, the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB), after conducting a survey submitted a report before the court saying that the abattoir was polluting the locality, and recommended to shift the facility away from human habitat.
The board has also asked the corporation to shut down the facilities and also initiated criminal proceedings against IMC in the lower court here, since it has not drawn any action plan to shift the abattoirs.
IMC has been facing problem in identifying land for shifting the facilities. Earlier, it decided to shift them near Devguradia trenching ground, but retracted, since the abattoirs should be setup in hygienic surroundings.
Sources said the administration was eyeing to bring in a high-tech facility, which would leave no waste after the slaughter.
