Upset over constant eve-teasing and sexual harassment by three youths, a 16-year-old girl attempted suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling in Rau area of Indore, police said on Friday.
The accused allegedly used to stalk the girl on her way to the school for last three months, a senior police official said, adding that the girl, a class 10 student, was so traumatised after the continuous teasing from the three accused that she attempted to end her life.
The girl has been admitted to a private hospital and her condition is said to be critical.
"The accused youths are still at large and hunt is on," said city superintendent of police (CSP) Annapurna AH Ghuraiya.
Police have registered a case against three accused under sections 354, 506 of IPC and Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act, the police officer said.
The CSP said that the girl attempted suicide by hanging herself at her home on Friday.
"Her cousin sister saw her hanging and saved her,” she said.
She is admitted in a private hospital.
The CSP further said that the accused youths had also threatened the girl’s parents when they had protested against the molestation.
"A couple of day ago, when the victim's parents went to their houses, the accused had threatened them," said the CSP.
The victim, in her statement said that she was depressed by the constant eve-teasing and sexual harassment by three youths — Santosh, Nilesh and Ram — who are the resident of the same locality.
According the victim's family, the trio had been molesting the girl for last few months and was forcing her to accept their friendship.
