Indore MP and Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan has objected to Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) and Indore Development Authority (IDA's) move to use the land of Marathi Middle School and former Deolalikar art gallery for the construction of multi-level parking complex.
Mahajan talked to municipal commissioner Manish Singh and IDA chairman Shankar Lalwani over phone from New Delhi to register her protest, an official release issued from Lok Sabha speaker's office stated on Sunday.
"They are city's prized heritage with which people's feelings are linked," she told Singh and Lalwani and added that the huge land encompassing the two institutes should be used to set up a national level institution which can promote art.
She suggested setting up Lalit Kala Academy or Marathi Sahitya Academy on the land located at stone's throw distance from Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) headquarters in city's central area.
She said she had already held talks with chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Lalit Kala Academy president in this connection.
Mahajan said Marathi Middle School and Deolalikar art gallery, which earlier was Indore School of Art, had produced renowned artistes, academicians and professionals who brought laurels to city.
Since public sentiments were attached with Indore School of Art and Marathi Middle School, she asked Singh and Lalwani to look for some other land for the construction of parking complex.
The two institutes are situated along side of the multi-crore land on MG Road. The erstwhile princely Holkar state had allotted the land for setting up Marathi school and Indore School of Art.
