A minor girl, who was allegedly set on fire by a Madhya Pradesh police officer two days ago, succumbed to her injuries at Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital in Indore on Saturday.
A case has been registered against assistant sub-inspector of police Prem Prakash Jaroliya. The ASI, who was a neighbour of the girl, Yasmeen, 11, in Sikandarabad locality, has been reported absconding with his family members after the police lodged the case against him on Saturday.
Yasmeen was rushed to hospital on Thursday with 90% burn injuries. Her mother alleged that Jaroliya beat her up and set her on fire. However, investigating officer Lakshmi Narayan told reporters that the girl had set herself ablaze. He, however, said an investigation was on.
On Friday, Jaroliya told reporters that he saw Yasmeen riding his daughter’s bicycle, which he alleged, was stolen on Wednesday. He said the girl told him that her mother had bought it for her. He went to her home to verify her claim with her mother. But her mother was not found at home, he said.
Later, the ASI said he rushed to his office and in the evening he heard that Yasmeen was admitted to MY Hospital. However, Jaroliya failed to explain as to why he didn’t report the theft to the police on Wednesday itself.
