In a simple and dignified ceremony Yashwant Rao Holkar, descendent of the erstwhile rulers of Indore, was married to Nairika, the daughter of industrialist Vijay Crishna Godrej at the Maheshwar fort, on the banks of Narmada river, on Tuesday.

Yashwant manages a business in Goa, while Nairika is a lawyer. They have been friends since childhood.

Maheshwar, situated some 70 km from Indore, was the place from where Ahilya Bai ruled over the Holkar kingdom in the 18th century.

The groom’s procession started from the Maheshwar Rajwada at 3.45 pm. Yeshwant and his father Richard Holkar were in a open old Rolls Royce, and were followed by the entire Scindia clan including Jyotiraditya Scindia who were in a Dodge. Family members including cousin sister Usha Raje Melhotra, her husband Satish Melhotra, actor and cousin Vijayendra Ghatge were also part of the procession. There were several other vintage cars in the two kilometer procession, which went around the fort. They were felicitated at various points by the locals who showered flowers and blessings.

Once the procession reached the gates of the fort, the groom and other family members waved at the crowd and went inside the fort where the marriage took place at ‘Goraj’ muhurat. The couple will exchange vows at Ahilyeshwar temple within the fort premises in Maheshwar.

Over 2000 guests had been invited to take part in the marriage and most of the royal families of the country had come to take part in the wedding.
