Self-styled godman Bhagwan Bapu, who has been named in a rape case, has secured anticipatory bail from the Indore bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court.
A case was registered against him under section 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC at Mahakaal police station of Ujjain in the last week of October, and since then he has been absconding.
Bapu’s counsel, Pramod Choubey, told the court that the complainant, a 47-year-old woman, had falsely implicated him.
She had also registered many false complaints against the family members of the Ujjain-based godman, Choubey said.
In her complaint to the police, the woman said Bapu entered into a physical relationship with her between 2011 and 2012 on the pretext of marriage.
“If there is no mala fide intention behind her complaint then she could have filed a complaint to police in 2012. Why did she take three years to lodge a complaint?” Choubey asked.
While Bapu was granted anticipatory bail on Thursday, the certified copy of the order was made available only on Saturday.
Without commenting on the merits of the case, Justice Alok Verma of Indore bench granted anticipatory bail to Bapu against a personal bond of Rs 75,000.
According to Choubey, Bapu performed a Bhagwat Katha in Kota, Rajasthan in 2010, after which the woman came along with him as his disciple, as she was abandoned by her family.
Sources said Bapu was once a driver to a saint and slowly became an orator himself and now owns a lavish ashram in Jaisingpura in Ujjain.
