Two teenage sisters drowned in a gurdwara pond in Betma police station area in Indore on Sunday morning.
The victims were identified as Chandni, 17 and Muskaan, 14, both residents of Dwarakapuri in Indore district.
Police said the girls, along with their parents, Mahesh Kumar Hirwani and Barkha, had gone to visit a local gurdwara. Two other friends of Chandni - Champa and Sweta - had also accompanied the family.
After offering prayers, the girls jumped into the gurdwara pond to take a bath at 11am. Suddenly, Muskaan started drowning. Chandni tried to reach to her rescue, but she also started drowning. Champa and Shweta also tried to save the sisters, but they too started drowning in the pond, the police said.
Watching all of them drowning, Muskaan’s mother raised the alarm. Subsequently, four youths jumped into the pond to save the girls’ life. Champa and Shweta were rescued by the youths, but Chandani and Muskaan could not be saved, the police said.
The bodies of were later sent for postmortem. The police have registered a case under section 174 of the CrPC and started investigation.
