Five policemen including a thana in-charge (TI) were suspended for allegedly trying to hush up a probe against the prime accused in a cricket betting case on Tuesday night.
The whole issue came into light when the TI had raided a premises and had booked a wrong person leaving behind the kingpin of the betting racket.
“Inspector Kamlesh Sharma, assistant sub inspector Balram Singh Tomar and constables Sawant Singh, Ritesh Jat and Satish have been suspended with immediate effect. After stripping them of field duty, the five policemen have been attached to police line,” said SP (West) Abid Khan.
The SP has now ordered a probe into the matter. ASP Aditya Pratap Singh will the probe team.
The SP said that Rajendra Nagar police discovered the betting on a cricket match in Nihalpura Mandi area two days ago. “Senior police officials came to know that the five policemen were trying to hush up the probe against the prime accused and drop the case against him,” the SP added.
The incident took place on Friday morning in Shiv City Colony at around 9.30 pm when the TI got information about teh betting racket. The constables on the direction of TI had raided the spot and nabbed one Alok Jain. Jain was brought to the police station, but was allegedly not booked after he paid a bribe. The police booked another person, but the senior officials came to know after the incident.
