People of Indore love their food and like to experiment with different cuisines. So it's not surprising that convenience of selecting the restaurant and getting the food home-delivered has led to a rise in the trend of ordering food online.

At present, two companies — and — have launched their operations in the city. TastyKhana, which launched its operations in June this year, has seen its monthly orders zoom from 50 to 600 in the past four months.

"Customers save about 30% when they place an order and choose an online payment system," Abhishek Srivastava, vice-president (marketing), told HT. The company has tied up with about 150 restaurants in Indore and plans to take the figure to more than 400 in the next three months. "We expect the number of orders to rise to about 2,000 per month in the next six months," he said. At present, the company operates in 18 cities and clocks 80,000 orders a month across India.

The company makes use of Google Maps to zoom into the precise location of the consumer as soon as he logs in. "It takes about 45 minutes to deliver the order and we have toll free helplines in case of any problem," he said. The customers can make the payment online through net banking, credit card or debit card. Alternatively, he can choose cash-on-delivery (COD) option.

Foodpanda, which had entered this business early, has operations in more than 100 cities across India.

Experts say that with paucity of time and increased demand for convenience, consumers in the metros are slowly resorting to online food ordering. The trend has only just caught up in the tier 1 and tier 2 cities where services have been launched recently. Going by the current trend, the consumers want to explore all types of cuisines and restaurants with just a click. The trend has been frequently observed amongst professionals wherein they can reach out to any and all restaurants of their choice without any hassle.

"In Indore, most of our customers prefer non-vegetarian dishes. We have also tied up with Dominos Pizza and other fast food restaurants," Srivastava said. It's not only main course which foodies love to order. It has been observed that a large number of food enthusiasts also love to place orders for evening snacks, starters and bakery products like cakes.
