A 13-year-old girl was murdered for drawing water from a hand pump in Chotta Bhawata village of MP’s Alirajpur district, the police said.

The incident occurred at 11 pm on Sunday when the minor – Surmada – along with her 20-year-old brother Nirmal and uncle Suresh went to fetch water from a hand pump belonging to 55-year-old Inder Singh Bhilala.

Surmada’s father informed the police that there was no drinking water at home so her daughter, son and a relative went to Bhilala’s handpump on a motorcycle.

“When we were drawing water from the handpump, Inder Singh and his 30-year-old son Mesta, who were in an inebriated state, came and started questioning us. They stopped us from taking the water saying that the pump was their private property and nobody could draw water from it. They also started abusing us without any reason,” Suresh said in his complaint to the police.

“They started attacking us with a bow and an arrow when one arrow pierced the left eye of Sumarda who died on the spot,” he added.

Both the accused fled from the spot.
