The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (MPTDC) will soon start two new tourist destinations in the backwaters of Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar dams in Khandwa district.
The department is developing the Indira Sagar Sports Complex at Indira Sagar Dam — the biggest man-made lake in the country near Hanumantia village — by spending Rs 20 crore and Sailani Island (in the backwaters of Omkareshwar dam) near the Omkareshwar jyotirlinga shrine at a cost of Rs 10.5 crore. Both the projects are at the final stage and expected to be open to tourists within three-six months.
Apart from accommodation facilities, the new tourist destinations will have sports facilities like water sports, jetty, floating house boat, paddle boat, skurfing, jal pari (mid-sized cruise boats) and a cruise boat.
Sharing the information with the Hindustan Times, MPTDC general manager MN Jamali said the initiative had been taken by the tourism department to develop aqua tourism in this part of the state as the Narmada that flows through western Madhya Pradesh has good options to develop aqua sports in the region for tourist attraction.
Jamali added that the catchment area of Indira Sagar dam is as huge as Kanha National Park and there are several permanent islets which can be developed as a tourism spot.
“Keeping tabs on this, MPTDC managing director Ashwani Lohani and a corporation team conducted a survey in the area to find a suitable location. After the survey, the department decided to develop the Indira Sagar Sports Complex at Indira Sagar backwaters near Hanumantia as well as an aqua sports destination in Omkareshwar as Sailani island in Khandwa,” Jamali said.
