An ex-Indian Revenue Services (IRS) officer Kamlesh Argal, hailing from Damoh, is on the run after his name came up as a conspirator in a plan of alleged kidnapping and murder of a former batchmate, sources in Thane police, Maharashtra said.

The former chief commissioner of Income Tax (CCIT) of Bhopal circle, Argal allegedly hatched a conspiracy with some of his associates to handpick goons from Mumbai and train them near Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh to kidnap and murder another ex-IRS officer Ashok Kacker, police sources said.

However, before the plan could be put into action, the criminal intelligence unit (CIU) of the Thane police nabbed the three goons from Bhiwandi (Mumbai) on April 11 on a tip-off and also arrested Rajesh Sinha, the manager of Argal’s Jabalpur-based agro forestry firm.

Thane police teams visited known locations of Argal including Jabalpur but he has remained untraced, sources said.

Thane deputy commissioner of police (crime), Parag Manere confirmed to HT over phone that Argal’s name appeared in the case and that four accused had been arrested. He, however, refused to divulge any further details saying that the investigation was still on.

Police sources said that Argal’s name appears in the FIR registered by Thane police.

The four have been booked for planning to murder, planning to kidnap, conspiracy and possession of illegal fire arms.

During interrogation, the accused revealed that Argal and his associates wanted to recover sum of over Rs 60 crore that was given to Kacker, sources said.

Argal and Kacker were said to be close friends earlier but fell off after money dispute as Argal retired from IRS to start his own firm and Kacker also took voluntary retirement to join the corporate sector in Mumbai. Argal and associates were reportedly planning the crime since 2013.

Meanwhile, sources in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said that an order to gather information related to the postings of Argal with I-T department at different locations was issued on Tuesday.
