Five people were killed and four others injured when a jeep, in which they were travelling, met with a head-on collision with a truck that was coming from the opposite direction on Indore-Kota road here, Agar police said on Sunday.
Sub-inspector GP Verma said the victims were identified as Seema, 55, a resident of Neemuch, Sarita, 25, Babulal, 65, Bittu alias Anshu, 12, all residents of Ujjain and the driver Govind, 25, was a resident of Manasa in Neemuch district.
The injured passengers including Mamta, 40, Manoj, 45, Parkhi, 11, and Rohan, 25, were admitted to Ujjain district hospital in serious condition.
The incident occurred on outskirts of Agar town when 10 pilgrims including five females and two minors were travelling to Haridwar from Ujjain. Only an 11-year-old girl remained unhurt in the accident.
"The jeep met with the accident after it moved out from Agar town," Verma said.
"After the incident, the truck driver ran away leaving his vehicle behind. A case has been registered against the driver under Section 304(A) (causing death by negligence) of Indian Penal Code. A search operation is on to arrest him," Verma said.
