A 15-year-old tribal girl was admitted at Sendhwa district hospital in a critical condition after she attempted to immolate self. She sustained 95% burn injuries and is battling for life.
Police said the incident occurred on Thursday night at Talawadi Mohalla of Sendhwa town, 60 km south of Barwani district headquarters.
Sendhawa urban police station in-charge Ajay Verma said during preliminary investigation it was found that the reason behind the self-immolation was frequent dispute between girl and her maternal grandmother over her love affair with a boy, who belongs to some other caste.
Verma added that on Thursday late night, a dispute erupted between them after the grandmother caught the girl with a boy in a compromising position in a tin shed situated near the house.
Verma informed that the girl, who belongs to the same town, started living along with her maternal grandmother after she lost her mother couple of years ago. While residing at Talawadi Mohalla, the girl fell in love with a boy of the same area.
As soon as the matter reached her grandmother, she started opposing the affair claiming that the boy belonged to the other caste.
On Thursday late night, the duo had a dispute over the issue. In the meantime, the boy came to the house and took the girl along with him. After sometime, grandmother started searching the girl and spotted duo in a shed situated some distance away from the house. The grandmother brought the girl to the home and scolded her. Later, the girl poured kerosene on her and set her self on fire. Locals rushed girl to the district hospital in a critical condition, where she is battling for her life.
Forensic science laboratory team and Sendhwa police on Friday visited the spot and started investigation into the matter.
During searching, police recovered love letters and other material from the residences of the boy and the girl. Police have also recorded the girl’s statement.
