A blind girl who was allegedly raped at a shelter home for women in Satna has become pregnant, police said on Monday.
The police registered a case and started an investigation into the incident.
The child line staff who saw the 19-year-old girl begging near a temple in Maihar on January 17 this year took her to the shelter home.
When the girl complained of pain in her stomach on February 2, she was admitted to the district hospital where her pregnancy test was found positive.
The hospital authorities then informed the Kotwali police station who recorded her statement.
Though the girl claimed that she was raped by someone at the shelter home, she could not remember the date, police said.
The sonography test of the girl indicated that she was not pregnant, police added.
However, the report of medical test to ascertain whether girl was raped is still awaited, police said.
Superintendent of police (SP) Satna Irsad Wali said a case of rape was registered and an investigation was on.
“Though the medical reports show that the girl is not pregnant, a case has been registered on the basis of her statement. If it requires, medical tests will be conducted again,” he told HT over phone.
However, in-charge of the department of women empowerment refused the girl’s allegation, saying three persons claiming themselves to be members of child line came to the shelter home and left the girl there.
“Our staff asked them to get all medical tests of the girl done but they did not do it. We repeatedly approached the child line staff and asked them to provide us requisite documents like medical certificate and others so that we could properly admit girl in shelter home, but they did not do anything. I am sure that she was not raped by anyone at the shelter home,” she added.
In-charge of child line could not be contacted for comments.
The police said the girl was begging at a temple along with a woman.
As the parents of the girl have died, she has no one to take care of her.
She told the police that after the death of her father about four months ago, she reached Maihar by mistake and came into contact with the woman and started begging with her.
