Hundreds of Muslims staged a demonstration at Regal Square on Saturday against Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Usha Thakur’s controversial statement asking Muslims to “sacrifice their sons” instead of goats on Eid-ul-Zuha.
Around 400 members from the community formed a human chain demanding penal action against Thakur.
The legislator was quoted by a section of the media saying “Muslims should sacrifice their sons.” However, when contacted on Saturday, Thakur said she was misquoted. “Qurbani (sacrifice) has several meanings. My statement has been twisted,” she said.
Thakur said she had only insisted that goats should be sacrificed in slaughter houses as slaughtering them in the open presented a gory sight.
“Goats worth `20,000 crore were slaughtered in the country on Eid-ul-Zuha. Same fund could be used to educate Muslims, whose illiteracy rate is high. I talked about changing the tradition with times. I said Muslims should send their sons to defence services where they could live for the country and sacrifice for the country,” Thakur clarified.
The BJP leader, however, stuck to another controversial statement she issued last year, saying, “Muslims should avoid entering Garba pandals during Navratri as Islam prohibits idol worship.”
“It is necessary for national security and safety of girls,” she said, adding that people should not be given entry to Garba pandals “without producing their photo identity cards.”
Muslim protestors said they would intensify agitation if penal action is not initiated against Thakur. The demonstration caused traffic jam at Regal Square.
