The indefinite satyagraha by hundreds of villagers entered the second day when the oustees of Sardar Sarovar Dam demanded putting an end to increasing height of the dam and reclamation of their rights over land and livelihood.
The satyagraha begun on Wednesday when villagers and tribals of Narmada valley, along with Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) activists and supporters of other organisations gathered at satyagraha venue at Rajghat in Barwani to pledge for a steadfast stir until the state government relents to their appeals and resolves issues related to rehabilitation and resettlement.
NBA activist Meera said, “Along with the satyagraha, we are also compiling records of the affected people and registering their grievances. The issues will be put before grievance redressal authorities.”
On Thursday, affected people of Manawar, Kukshi tehsils of Dhar district and Sendhwa tehsil of Barwani district came to Rajghat in large numbers and voiced their concerns.
The authorities committed numerous kinds of frauds, denying the rights of the tribals and villagers, Meera alleged.
People spoke about the fraudulent practices by government in awarding compensation, registration of land and deplorable condition of resettlement sites.
Chinmay Mishra, an Indore-based social rights activist, said, “As per new Land Acquisition Act, the villagers and tribals are owners of land and entitled to fair compensation.”
