The first international flight from Indore to Dubai slated to start by the year end will not be a direct flight but will go via Mumbai or Delhi. The passenger traffic is not sufficient to make the direct Indore-Dubai flight financially viable, say experts.

Gulf carrier Emirates is likely to launch a flight service to Dubai from Indore by the end of this year. After returning from Dubai two days ago, state urban administration and development minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said that the government wants Emirates to launch a flight from Indore and is giving full support to the airline, which is also keen to start Indore-Dubai flight.

The Indore airport management has also taken steps to launch international flights. "Indore airport has infrastructure to launch international flights, and the airport management has sent a proposal for starting an excise and customs clearance counter to the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)," an airport official told HT.

However, the airline is yet to conduct a survey of passenger traffic from Indore. "People from Indore and other parts of the state mostly travel to Singapore and Thailand. A flight to Dubai will not be financially viable unless it goes via Mumbai or Delhi," overseas travel consultant Dilip Ramani said.

In the past, other airlines such as Air India and Air Asia have dropped the idea of launching Indore-Dubai direct flights after conducting traffic survey. An email query sent to Emirates did not elicit any response.

After securing regulatory approvals, Emirates Airlines may launch operations from Indore this December. The government has also provided statistics related to the export of medicines from the region to the foreign destinations following which Emirates showed interest to launch international flight from Indore.

The proposed flight will help in the export of flowers, fruits and other agricultural products to the Gulf countries, which would benefit the farmers of the region.
