Indore-Goa flight

Good news for those planning a trip to Goa this summer as a private airline will be launching direct flights from Indore to the beach city from June 16.

Jet Airways has announced the launch of an Indore-Goa flight with a stopover in Mumbai; however, the passengers will not have to deboard the plane and the flight will take off after taking additional passengers from Mumbai.

At present, flyers need to change aircrafts in Mumbai and it takes about six to eight hours to reach Goa.

"The flight will take off from Indore at 12.50 pm and arrive in Goa at 16.05 pm," a Jet Airways spokesperson said.

With additional flights to Chennai and Ahmedabad scheduled in the summer, flight connectivity from Indore has considerably improved in recent times.

Apart from a daily flight, the airways have also launched a weekly morning flight to Ahmedabad via Pune.

Another private airline GoAir too connects Indore to Bengaluru and Hyderabad apart from Nagpur, Delhi and Mumbai.

However, the state carrier Air India flies to only two destinations - Delhi and Mumbai - from Indore.

The average passenger traffic from Indore has touched about 1.18 lakh per month in the first three months of 2015 as compared to 90,000 flyers during the same period in the previous year.

Travel operators say that falling airfares coupled with poor rail connectivity have prompted many to opt for flights from Indore.

"With domestic fares becoming affordable, people don't mind shelling out a few thousands extra if they get a direct flight," travel agent Dilip Ramani said.

The number of people going for vacations and business trips too is on the rise, he added.

Last year, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Madhya Pradesh state council had held a meeting with senior officials of private airlines to explore the possibilities of improving the air connectivity from the region.

Air Arabia and Emirates Airlines had also conducted surveys to launch international flights from Indore to the Middle East; however, final decision is yet to be taken in this regard.
